Essential Oils and your hair, health and beauty

Are you looking for ways to moisturize, heal and protect your skin this winter?  Why not do it the all natural way and make it  yourself with  essential oils.

What are essential oils?

An essential oil is a liquid that is distilled from leaves, stems, flowers, bark roots and other elements of a plant.  They contain a number of healthful and healing quallities and are used in aromatherapy wherein the oils are carefully inhaled, enter the lungs and are absorbed into the bloodstream.

What are some types of essential oils?

Essential oils are good for a number of health comoplaints as well as for beauty and moisturizing the hair and skin.  Below is a list of a few of the commonly used oils.

Sage - Can stimulate hair growth, is also a diuretic and astringent.

Bergamot - Is good for acne, colds, boils, sore throat and mouth infections.

Jojoba - is a great moisturizer for hair and skin.

Juniper - is an antiseptic, diuretic and is very good for gas.

Grapeseed - Great conditioner for hair and skin.  Also lowers cholesterol.

Almond Oil - Great for strengthening hair.  Also, adds shine and antioxidants.
The list is endless and this is just a sampling of the hundreds of oils that can be used to enhance beauty and health.  Further,the benefits of essential oils can be gained through aromatherapy and through lotions, hair creams. 

Essential Oils and hair health

For example, as an aid to hair health, you can mix almond oil into one of your favorite hair preparations, to strengthen the hair and add shine.  Another popular oil is sage oil for hair growth.  Remembering that Afro-American type hair is fragile and has a tendency for breakage, use a few drops of almond oil in one of your favorite hair creams and use daily or as needed. 

Essential Oils and skin health

Essential oils are also beneficial for skin health.  For example, tea tree oil is an anti-infective and can be used for acne and other skin inflammations.  Just diilute in a carrier oil. Tea tree oil is also useful in treating  toe nail fungus. Treatment must be diligent - done daily.  Jojoba oil is another oil that is good for moisturizing the skin.
