MSM and Hair Growth

Many women are spending hundreds of dollars trying random products and chemicals to stimulate hair growth.  Due to stress, diet and medications, heredity, chemical and heat abuse, many are finding that the hair just doesn't seem to grow  as quickly as before. I have been doing some reading and research on MSM and its role in hair growth.  I wanted to share this information here on the blog with others.  I will be adding it to my hair care routine and giving updates on the results.

What is MSM?

MSM (methylsulfonylmethane) is organic sulfur used by the body to grow bone, hair and nails. ("What is MSM?http://www.mayoclinic.com/)  The body processes the sulfur in MSM to promote growth in tissue that utilizes keratin as a base. The hair is made of keratin held together by sulfur bonds. So this helps to understand why taking MSM is beneficial to growing hair. It is also used for arthritic pain relief.

How much MSM should be taken for hair growth?

How much to take for hair growth?  Well, it would be wise before starting any new vitamin or supplement to  check with your health care professional or pharmacist.  Once you've gotten the okay, titrate upward slowly - the lower end of the range is starting with about 500 mg daily.

What foods are high in MSM?

It is always a great idea to get vitamins and nutrients as much as possible from foods.  Foods that are high in sulfur are:

Broccoli
Cauliflower
Cabbage
Kale
Onion
Garlic

Remember to eat an overall health diet anyway.  Cut out high fats, sodium and sugar foods.  Drink plenty of water which is important in circulation and moisturizing the hair. And start a growth chart.

Check back in a few months and let me know your results.
