Image by howzey via FlickrI love the natural look of unrelaxed hair that is shiny thick and curly textured. I have not put a relaxer in my hair since 2004--good riddance, and I only did it then due to a stylist suggestion. Hmpf, never again.
So, whenever I see "How to" articles on natural hair care, my antennas go up. I want to share some of the most outstanding information in this post along with things that I have learned from personal experience since I began my most recent natural hair care journey.
Comments, suggestions and personal experience from readers are always welcome.
Starting out squeaky clean
After reading numerous reviews and hair care updates, I have found a 100 percent consensus from hair care professionals that shampooing with lots of suds-creating shampoos are out. Such products contain chemicals such as sodium lauryl sulfate and sodium laureth sulfate, both of which can strip the natural oils from the already moisture starved ethnic hair.
Condition, condition and condition
As I have already mentioned on this blog, I have been using a number of natural products which includes oils such as olive, argan, amla and coconut oils to moisturize and nourish my hair back to health. (I go to East Indian grocery stores for these products). So far, so good. My hair is growing in strong. And, I am keeping it well moisturized with these wholesome and natural oils. Believe me, they can't be beat and the price beats that of most chemical containing products.
Apply the oils every two days or so for great moisturization. Use with a cap, warm and apply and cover. 30 minutes or so should be good. Wash as usual with a suds free shampoo.
Remember, to drink plenty of water and stimulate the scalp (to increase blood supply) with massage. Also, exercise to increase overall circulation.
