The nail drying machines in nail salons come in two varieties: air drying and UV drying. Caution is necessary when using the UV type because the rays emitted by those machines are UVA rays which are the penetrating type that can cause wrinkles, and skin cancer. (UVA rays are the deep, penetrating rays that cause wrinkles, skin damage related to aging and skin cancer).
The UVA rays are equivalent to that of a tanning bed. But, in addition to exposing the skin to cancer causing rays, those UVA rays subject the skin to increased problems such as wrinkles, loss of elasticity and age spots.
What can you do to limit the risk?
There are two things that you can do to minimize the risk. You can opt to forego the UV machines and spend a little more time to allow the nails to dry naturally. Or, you can liberally apply sunscreen on your hands and feet for protection.
