Hyperpigmentation: dealing with those dark spots

Are you plagued with acne scars, blotches and dark spots? Many women are, particularly after pregnancy, menopause and experiencing other hormonal changes involved with getting older.  What can be done to quickly and  safely eliminate this nuisance?

Let's take a look at what is going on here.

Hyperpigmentation-what is it?

Hyperpigmentation is the name given by experts for this troublesome condition.  The story begins with melanin, which give us that warm, rich, brown skin.  Unfortunately, when trauma or something that irritates the skin takes place, melanin production can go into overdrive.  This causes the dark spots, causing uneven skin color.  The name of the condition is post inflammatory hyperpigmentation. Sadly, the more melanin you have, the more of a reaction you will see.

What products can help?

Many products have been on the market that promise to fade these spots quickly and perfectly. leaving  the user with even, smooth skin.

Hydroquinone 2%, which can be purchased over the counter, has been around for over 40 years but faces possible banning due to its link with cancer and other diseases.  Most experts agree that this product should be avoided.

Other more natural products such as kojic acid, azaleic acid and licorice are other options that work.  But, since they are natural, it will take a longer time to work.  So, patience is required. Remember also, that the longer that the discoloration has been present, the deeper the hyperpigmentation is likely to be therefore, persistence is required.

Many major beauty lines have an arsenal of products to help.  Clinique" "Even Better Clinical" and Estee Lauder's "Idealist" are two products that many have had positive results with. (I have successfully used both.)

What should be done to protect the skin?

Make sure tht you use sunscreen to help protect the skin.  The sunscreen that you use should be at least a 30 SPF.  This should be worn  even on cloudy days.  Make sure to apply it at least one half hour before going outside.

Another thing that can be done to help the skin is exfoliation, which gently removes the surface skin cells to reveal the younger, clearer and healthier skin cells.  This also helps to remove some skin discolorations.  Don't exfoliate the skin too regularly because this can cause scars.

Every head the expression, "an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure?"  If it appears that something is going with your skin, whether it be bug bites or acne, get right on the problem before it get out of control with hyperpigmentation.

Chemical peels and lasers are all options to consider if results aren't experienced with the milder methods.
