MSM: How Much Can You Take For Hair growth?

For overall health and beauty, it is wise to eat a varied diet of fruits, vegetables, grains. But, living in a world where foods are often deficient in nutrients due to shipping and packing, it becomes imperative to take supplements in addition to the foods that we eat.

One supplement that has become particularly popular for hair and skin growth MSM.  In this post MSM's role in beauty and hair growth will be examined.

What is MSM?

MSM, or methylsulfonylmethane, is a sulfur compound which supplies the body with an organic form of sulfur which is important in forming muscles, hair, nails and skin.  MSM has also been used to alleviate arthritic pain.  It also helps build up the immune system, by helping the body fight against allergies.

Sulfur is also important in the formation of proteins through  the formation of disulfide bonds. This is where the importance in hair growth becomes evident; the hair is composed of keratin (a protein) held together by disulfide bonds. So, it is vital that we give the body the raw materials for healthier  and thicker hair. (Notice the sulfur smell if you burn hair).

What foods contain MSM?

MSM is found in fresh vegetables, fruits, fish and meats.  However, the problem is the fact that, MSM, like other nutrient is lost when food is cooked and cleaned.  Therefore, it is important to eat fresh wholesome foods and to supplement with vitamins.

How Much MSM to take for hair growth?

The answer to this question is individualized due to varied nutritional needs and health status of different people. However, patients have taken the supplement in quantities of 2000 to 10,000 milligrams per day for pain relief without ill effects.  So, it is safe to say that these quantities are safe for hair growth. Individually, it will be based on your body's need to find where you belong.

As a rule, it is best to take supplements in divided doses for better absorption since the body excretes excess supplements if too much is taken at one time.  Also, MSM may be taken on an empty stomach, but if you have a sensitive stomach, it may be taken with food to decrease the chance of gastric upset.

However, it is important to note that if you are taking medications, or have medical conditions, please consult with your health care professional before taking supplements.

How long does it take to see results?

In about six weeks you should see results in hair and nail growth.  It is also important to drink plenty of water for hair and overall health.

Can MSM be taken if you have sulfur allergies?

The two are unrelated.  Remember that organic sulfur occurs naturally in the body and in whole foods.  The inorganic, lab synthesized inorganic sulfur, sulfites and sulfates are completely different.
