Can you prevent split ends?

If you are trying to grow your hair out, it is important to take meticulous care of your locks by conditioning and moisturizing them along with takings some common sense steps to stop damaging practices.  This article will discuss some important steps to help keep healthy by eliminating a common problem of women of all hair types: split ends.

What are split ends?

Split ends can be especially problematic for ethnic hair which is usually dry and fragile dsue to tight coils.   Ssplit ends form when the hair cuticle wears down and the inside layers fray and split creating that"Y" formation at the hair ends.  Now, in all honesty, split ends can't actually be "cured" but they can be temporarilly covered with good conditioning and serums.  But, once the hair is washed again, the split ends will re-appear

What are the causes?

Below is a list of common practices that cause split ends to develop.  How many of them can you check off that you do regularly?
  1. Don't brush the hair every day .  Instead, use a wide tooth comb with soft tips.  (Don't brush wet hair).
  2. Don't overwash as this can cause the problem as well.  Make sure that your hair stays moist. This means from the inside out - drink plenty of water.
  3. Heated appliances and their overuse is probably one of the single most damaging practices that cause split ends.  Also, avoid hot combs, blow dryers and slat irons.
How to treat split ends

Try to eat a healthy diet consisting of fruits, vegetables and grains.  Vitamins are important in growth and health of your hair. Here are a few other things that you can do to help your hair stay healthy and free of split ends.

  Clipping off those dead and damaging frizzy, split ends area must.  Usually, it is suggested every six to eight weeks. How much?  Usually 1/4 inch and one inch above the split.  (Of course, if you don't feel comfortable doing this, contact your hairdresser).

Use leave in conditioners (ex. shea butter, olive oil, etc.).  Deep condition at least once a month.

Use satin sheets and pillowcases which helsp to prevent tangling.
