Debunking three beauty myths

Do skin creans containing antioxidants really make your skin appear younger?  Can exfoliation really help fade hyperpigmentation? Have you ever wondered how much truth there is to these claims? I know I have.

I was just doing some research on numerous beauty claims that are being made regarding common products on the market. I came across some very interesting information in "O" magazine's Ask Dr. Val writeen by Valerie Monroe. I thought that it would be interesting to share this information on the blog.

I would invite comments from folks who have had success with these claims.

How do firming body lotions work?

According to Arielle N.B. Kauvar,  M.D. clinical associate professor of dermatology at New York University Medical Center, as quoted in the article,  "firming lotions are good for moisturization of the skin.  This temporarily improves the appearance of the skin."  The doctor goes on to say that antioxidants added to some products may help reduce collagen breakdown, but will not stimulate new collagen and sking thickening.

Do creams and lotions containing collagen deliver it into the skin?

According to Dr. Neil Sucidck, clinical associate professsosr or dermatology at New York Prebyterian Hospital-Weill Cornell Medical Center in New York City, as quoted in "O,"  'There has been no scientific evidence to suggest that there is enought penetration of collagen transdermally to be depoeited into the dermis.'' So, in plain English, the answer is 'no."
