Silicone and smoothing curly-kinky textured hair

If you are like me, you're looking for hair manageability, curl loosening, shine and moisturization for that dry hair and scalp.  The days of using harsh relaxers to achieve these  goals are gone. Natural is in.  I believe that manageability and hair health can be achieved without these horrible chemicals.

Earlier today, I was looking at some information on de-frizzing hair with silicone and decided to look up some information on  it.  I'd like to share the knowledge here.

Silicone and your hair health

Silicones have found their way into beauty and hair products due to some amazing properties:
  • Ability as a conditioning agent for softness, shine and manageability.
  • It forms a film over the hair shaft improving absorption of moisture into the hair.  This film then seals in moisture and also give the hair some protection against the heat if using heated appliances such as flat irons, blow dryers or straightening combs.
  • The fact that it delivers moisture to the hair is important to black women and others with ethnic hair since the curly-kinky texture leaves the hair day and prone to breakage.

How does silicone straighten  hair?

How does silicone help straighten the hair? It helps minimize frizz because it's water resistant and prevents water from entering the hair shaft and swelling it.  So, using a shampoo, conditioner and styling serum with silicone will help control frizz, detangle and add shine.

Keep in mind  that it might not render the hair "bone straight" as some chemical relaxershave done, but, who cares? More and more women are opting for the more natural, loosened curl look anyway.  The big plus  is the fact that the hair is not being damaged by chemical relaxers.

How do you recognize silicone?

Just look for amino phenyl trimethicone on the label.  This is the ingredient that adds the shine and softness.

I'd  like to invite anyone who has tried silicone products for curl loosening to leave a comment.
