Sunblock 2011: What you need to know

Summer time and the living is easy.  This means more outside activities and fun.  But, what do you need to know to protect your skin from those dangerous UVA and UVB rays? Let's find out.  Your health depends on your knowledge of sunblock.

Sun block facts

Yes, we know that melanin provides a degree of protection for darker skin tones, but sun UVA and UVB rays can do damage to dark skin as well. And, with all the meticulous pampering the rest of the year, why jeopardize it while enjoying summer fun?

According to an online Essence poll, only 14.5 respondents regularly use sunscreen. This puts some at risk for skin damage and other problems.  At the very least, it is recommended to use a minimum SPF of 30, which blocks out 97 percent of UVB rays.  (UVB rays are the ones that cause burning) It is also important to look for buzz words such as broad spectrum which protect from both UVA and UVB rays. (UVA penetrate deeper and can cause damage such as wrinkles, collagen breakdown and hyperpigmentation or dark spots.)

Antioxidant protection

Research is finding that antioxidants, which are good for overall health protection from free radical damage, is important in seeking a sunblock.  Read the labels and look for ingredients such as vitamins A, C and E.  Also, be sure to take a good multivitamin with antioxidants to get the added protection you need. This will help protect  your skin from dark spots.  And, remember to moisturize regularly.

Enjoy the summer fun!
